Ever wondered where we will go from HDTV? It seems the next step up from high definition is, wait for it – Ultra High Definition. Or UHDTV for short. The name for the new television standard was agreed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). So, when will we begin seeing these UHDTVs then? More details this way…
The recommendation comes via a report by the ITU that suggests UHDTV is the term given to new televisions that will have a resolution of 8-megapixels resolution of 3840×2160 pixels, going up to “the next level” with an equivalent of 32-megapixels, or 7680×4320 pixels. To put that into perspective, today’s pictures are between 1-2-megapixels, the ITU says.
The “4K” and “8K” UHDTV systems will benefit from “improved colour fidelity: and have options for higher numbers of pictures per second than for today’s television systems.”
The difference in quality will be such that each of these steps is described as being similar to the switch from old standard definition television to the high definition television pictures we currently enjoy.
David Wood, Chairman of the ITU Working Party 6C hailed it as the “dawn of a new age for television” that will bring “unprecedented levels of realism and viewer enjoyment,” he said.
“It’s a historic moment. Some years will pass before we see these systems in our homes, but come they will.”
In the meantime high definition televisions continue to wow our eyeballs as they become more affordable amid the rise of 3D TV in the home. Although some, like the Toshiba 55LZ2 are glasses-free, but come at a high cost.
Just like HDTV and 3D TVs, prices are sure to begin on the steep side, but still, we can’t wait to see for ourselves the next step in the evolution of television. Your next television could be a UHDTV.
