Just re-purchased your favourite movies on Blu-ray so you can see them in HD? We’ve got good and bad news for you today if so: Sony and Panasonic have teamed up to develop a next-generation optical disc that can store up to 300GB – that’s six times bigger than a dual-layer 50GB Blu-ray at the moment, potentially making way for 4K films you can buy in the shops. Is it time to replace all your box sets once again?
While you can already stream Sony films in super sharp 4K over the web, the Japanese gadget giant hasn’t forgotten about physical media: it’s teamed up with it rival and pledged to create a next-gen disc with a huge 300GB capacity by 2015.
Although Sony doesn’t specifically state the disc will be used for 4K films, with a resolution four times that of full HD Blu-rays, they’d be the perfect fit for it: while you might be beaming down most of your flicks from the web via Netflix or rival services, discs still have their place for storing content long-term, especially since it’s not clear that UK broadband speeds are going to prove a match for data-packed 4K video streaming.
