Amazon Kindle Fire in UK, BlackBerry 10 delay, Amazon phone rumours, and more Mass Effect

 

Welcome to this week’s gadget digest. Here we round up some of the week’s stories that you may have missed, or that fell under our watchful radar. Today we’ve got word on a uK arrival for Amazon’s Kindle Fire, an Amazon phone, the latest on those BlackBerry 10 handsets, a new look at Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and more.

Amazon Kindle Fire coming to the UK?

The Amazon Kindle Fire isn’t on sale in the UK, but that looks set to change. It’s been widely reported this week that the Kindle Fire will finally go on sale later this year. If it does, the 7-inch tablet that can play games and movies will arrive in time to do battle with Google’s 7-inch Nexus 7 tablet.

New Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 trailer reveals new baddie

A new Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 trailer was released earlier in the week giving fans of the series a first look at new villain Raul Mendez, leader of the bizarrely-named 99%. The story centers on a war that takes place in 2025, and will feature all kinds of futuristic weapons, including remote controlled gun-toting quadricopters.

BlackBerry 10 handsets delated until January

We already know that new BlackBerry 10 handsets are on the way, but not this year. BlackBerry confirmed this week that we won’t see the new BlackBerry 10 devices won’t be hitting the shops until January 2013 at the earliest. The operating system has taken longer to develop than anticipated. Were you waiting on the new handsets? 


 

Amazon 5-inch phone to go on sale this year?


Word is that Amazon is testing a brand new smartphone of its own. Rumours this week suggest it will have a 5-inch screen and be sold at a very competitive price. It follows rumours that the Amazon Kindle Fire will finally launch in the UK later this year.

Apple iPad 7.85-inch rival to take on Kindle Fire?

The Apple iPad 3 is on the cards for a 2012 launch, that’s what all gadget fans are hoping but that’s expected to be a full-size 10-inch tablet, or is it? Apple seems to be keeping it’s options open on the size front, as it looks like the company is also toying with the idea of a 7.85-inch variant to go head-to-head with the Kindle Fire.

Pundits around the globe are suggesting that the first quarter of 2012 will see the launch of the Apple iPad 3. However, news is surfacing that Apple has been looking into sourcing parts for a smaller version of the tablet too, with a 7.85-inch screen being cited, which would make it a direct competitor to the Amazon Kindle Fire.

If sales figures are true, then the Amazon Kindle Fire hasn’t been the out-and-out success people were expecting and with Apple currently controlling around 90 per cent of the fledgling tablet market, if it should decide to go for a smaller form factor, it could well claim an even larger chunk of the market.

Apart from the size of the screen, there seems to be little in the way of hard facts at the moment, but it is keeping the Apple rumour mill busy. We’d like to see a Retina screen on any potential Apple iPad Mini, just to keep things pin sharp.
