Lumus develops transparent TV glasses with virtual 90-inch screen

Lumus is the latest company to show off some glasses that double as twin cinema screens, but this pair of specs has one huge difference over rivals – they’re actually transparent. The fact you’ll also be able to see through the screens opens up a whole new world of possibilities – read on to find out more.

We’ve seen quite a few glasses that work as cinema screens in the past year – from Sony’s 3D Viewer – to more subtle options. All of them have had one thing in common, apart from the ability to project a huge virtual screen, that is.

Put a pair of most of these glasses on, and you’ll no longer be able to see what’s going on around you. Sure, this is great when you’re sitting down and just want to be entertained, but there are downsides, not least the fact that you look more than a little strange!

A new invention from Lumus could be the solution, offering twin screens that appear to be the equivalent of an 87-inch panel, yet the glasses from Lumus also offer transparent lenses. This means they could provide augmented reality features – changing the way we play games in and around the home – or you could simply turn off the TV image, and head to the toilet or kitchen without walking into a wall.

The glasses project a 720p image at present, but according to Tech Crunch a 1080p pair are also in the pipeline. Unfortunately, both are still at the prototype stage, so don’t expect to see them in a shop near you any time soon.

Would you buy a pair of glasses to replace a large TV? Leave a comment and let us know.
