Weirdest gadgets of 2011

Weirdest gadgets of 2011

Weirdest gadgets of 2011

We’ve seen some cracking gadgets during 2011, but there really has been something for everyone. Even if you like the stranger gadgets, there have been some brilliant products on display. Join us after the cut, for the weirdest gadgets of 2011.

We’ve gather together some of the wackiest gadgets of 2011 below. Read on to find out more.

AFT iCarta toilet roll holder iPod dock There are few stranger concepts than a toilet roll holder that doubles as an iPod dock. Have you ever wanted to leave your iPod or iPhone in the toilet, ready and waiting to supply music while you go about your business? If so, this is the perfect solution, although we’re not convinced about its hygienic credentials! It’s certainly a potty idea!

Fabric mouse Novelty mouses seem to be getting more and more popular, but even among car-shaped creations the carpet mouse stands out! Made from offcuts of… well.. carpet, the carpet mouse does exactly what it says on the tin. As with the toilet roll holder iPod dock, however, we’re not certain about just how hygienic it will be – it’s not exactly easy to stick it in the wash after a few months of hard use…

Gadget bikes 2011 saw some particularly weird bikes hit the market, including the Magic Wheel, Rock-it and Street Surfer. If you want to stand out from the crowd while you get fit, then check out the gang’s video, with some truly bizarre gadget bikes.

Logitech G13 gameboard If you’re a keen gamer, it’s worth checking out the Logitech G13. We’ve never seen anything like it before, and it’s a cross between a keyboard, mouse and joypad. It has 25 programmable keys, and is the perfect addition for taking advantage of the latest and most complex games. It definitely looks weird though!

Giant LEGO Out of all the things we saw at the Gadget Show Live earlier this year, few things impressed us as much as the Giant LEGO! A huge LEGO brick, with an even larger LEGO man’s head on top, it’s a toy fan’s dream. It also doubles up as storage, so you’ll be able to put it to good use

Top 5 Apple accessories every Apple fan would love

Whether you own an Apple iPhone 4S, an iPad 2 or a MacBook Pro there are plenty of accessories you can buy for each. What’s more, with Christmas just around the corner, you’ve just enough time to get them on your list for Santa. Check out the Top 5 Apple accessories every Apple fan would love!

From keyboard docks to earphones, we’ve selected five accessories for Apple gadgets any Apple fan would love to receive. Read on for our top five Apple accessory picks and potential stocking filler ideas for the Apple fan.

Apple iPad keyboard dock

If you’ve got an Apple iPad you’ll find typing on its screen takes some getting used to. Thankfully you can buy a keyboard attachment that docks onto the bottom of the iPad – keeping it upright while allowing you to type away. The official keyboard docks are very compact, are made from aluminium, and have low profile keys. It’s also small enough to pop in your bag with your iPad 2.

Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air

OK, so we’re using the term ‘accessory’ loosely here, but if you already own an iPhone or iPod Touch, the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air is one of the best pieces of kit for getting the most from your iTunes music collection. It looks and sounds fantastic. The latest model features AirPlay, letting you stream music from any Apple computer to the Zeppelin Air to fill up the room with sound.

SoundMagic E10

Apple’s portable range of gadgets are well made, have some great features and are capable of delivering top-notch sound. But only if you’ve got a decent pair of earphones. The standard Apple earphones that come bundled do a job, but aren’t of the best quality. For fantastic-sounding earphones without the high cost check out the SoundMagic’s E10 earphones are the best in its class. They cost just £35 but to do the job of earphones up to three times the cost.

iPad Smart Cover

Got an Apple iPad 2? If so, these iPad Smart Covers are very good for protecting your tablet without the unnecessary bulk that usually comes with covers. A clever design neatly folds against the iPad 2 to protect its screen. The Smart cover even doubles up as a keyboard stand that folds into an upright position for comfortable typing.

Apple Magic Mouse

For Apple MacBooks and and the iMac Apple’s Magic Mouse is a wonderful accessory that uses the same multi-touch technology you’ll find in the iPhone. Apple’s Magic Mouse introduced the first range of multi-touch mouse that you don’t need to move to scroll through pages. It combines the same functionality of a two-button mouse without the buttons.

Lumus develops transparent TV glasses with virtual 90-inch screen by

Lumus develops transparent TV glasses with virtual 90-inch screen

Lumus is the latest company to show off some glasses that double as twin cinema screens, but this pair of specs has one huge difference over rivals – they’re actually transparent. The fact you’ll also be able to see through the screens opens up a whole new world of possibilities – read on to find out more.

We’ve seen quite a few glasses that work as cinema screens in the past year – from Sony’s 3D Viewer – to more subtle options. All of them have had one thing in common, apart from the ability to project a huge virtual screen, that is.

Put a pair of most of these glasses on, and you’ll no longer be able to see what’s going on around you. Sure, this is great when you’re sitting down and just want to be entertained, but there are downsides, not least the fact that you look more than a little strange!

A new invention from Lumus could be the solution, offering twin screens that appear to be the equivalent of an 87-inch panel, yet the glasses from Lumus also offer transparent lenses. This means they could provide augmented reality features – changing the way we play games in and around the home – or you could simply turn off the TV image, and head to the toilet or kitchen without walking into a wall.

The glasses project a 720p image at present, but according to Tech Crunch a 1080p pair are also in the pipeline. Unfortunately, both are still at the prototype stage, so don’t expect to see them in a shop near you any time soon.

Would you buy a pair of glasses to replace a large TV? Leave a comment and let us know.

Top 5 accessories for your Xbox 360 this Christmas

Top 5 accessories for your Xbox 360 this Christmas
When it’s time to look back, 2011 will be remembered as a great year for Xbox 360 gaming. Highlights such as Gears of War 3, Forza Motorsport 4 and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and more have made it one to enjoy.
To help you enjoy your Xbox 360 even more we’ve compiled a list of some of the best accessories worth looking at this Christmas for all budgets. Take a look.

Microsoft Kinect

If you’ve got an Xbox 360 and not yet invested in a Kinect, it’s worth having a think about. A year from launch Kinect now takes advantage of some great games that include Kinect Sports Season 2, Child of Eden, Dance Central 2 and UFC Personal Trainer. If you’ve got children, there’s plenty for them to play, with games such as: Sesame Street: once Upon a Monster, Kinectimals, Kinect Disneyland Adventures, and others.

New features are being added all the time. This year saw the addition of voice control, which is expected to play a big part next year in upcoming titles such as Mass Effect 3. The latest Xbox 360 dashboard hub now lets owners search for film and gaming content on their console using their voice. Rumours of the next Xbox console doubling as a set-top box acting as a media hub also suggest that Kinect may also play a role in the next generation of Xbox console.

Nyko Zoom

One of the downsides to owning a Kinect unit is requiring enough space to swing your arms. With this add-on you’ll be able to reduce the space needed to play by up to 40 per cent, letting you play in smaller bedrooms. A wide angle optical lens attachment clips onto the Kinect, magnifying the space that Kinect detects. It means that even those with less space can enjoy the delights of swinging a virtual bat in Kinect Sports: Season 2, or doing the silly shuffle in Dance Central.

Xbox 360 Dual Charger Station

Available from most video game accessory retailers and online stores, the Xbox 360 Dual Charger Station lets you charge two Xbox 360 controllers at once while docked into the console’s USB port. You could even charge one, while playing with the other. Its holder lets you neatly once you’ve finished off that Gears of War 3 Horde session. LED indicators flash from red to green once the controllers are fully charged. It’s basic, but it does the job.

Microsoft Wireless Speed Wheel

Sure, there are more advanced steering wheel set-ups available, but if you’re looking for a game-changing accessory that won’t break the bank, check out the Microsoft Wireless Speed Wheel. It might look odd, but it’s highly responsive: using motion sensors to guide steering. Rumble feedback, D-pad navigation and trigger buttons to accelerate and brake mean it’s all you need to get enjoying games such as Forza Motorsport 4. It’s officially licensed too, so you know you’ll be getting top quality.

Astro A40 Audio System and gaming headset

For gadget fans who take their gaming as seriously as their audio, the Astro A40 headset are some of the best gaming headset money can buy. Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound fit for an audiophile, noise cancelling microphone technology and an accompanying MixAmp Pro amp to tailor sound preferences delivers an unrivaled gaming audio experience. Don one of these and you’ll never go back to playing minus a headset ever again. At £220, they are pricey, but you get what you pay for. For a slightly more affordable, but still top-of-the-range alternative, also check out Tritton’s AX 720 headset.
It costs £100 less, also does Dolby 7.1 surround sound and creates a just as immersive aural experience. Just try playing horror game Dead Space 2 with one of these without flinching. Go on. We dare you.
