Next-gen iPhone: Here's what we know already

The next iPhone is hotly tipped to launch on September 10, but what can we expect to see? The rumour mill has gone into overdrive of late, with leak after leak showing off what purports to be Apple’s next handset in a variety of guises. There could even be more than one model about to launch. So strap yourself in, we’re about to run down what we’ll see from Apple’s next mobile.

A budget model

This is one of the most persistent rumours of recent months. Apple is said to be readying a cut-price version of its best-selling handset, to compete with the likes of the Google Nexus 4. The budget blower could be named the iPhone 5C. You might think this would be a bit of a departure for Apple, which usually makes high-end devices for monied customers, but the company has had a finger in the budget pie for a while now. Whenever it announces a new model of handset, it reduces the price of an older one, keeping a cheaper, lower-specced variant on sale. You can still buy the iPhone 4, for example. So would a dedicated lower-priced iPhone really be that unexpected?

Two models will launch

This isn’t to say Apple will abandon the high end altogether. Not so. Rumours say the Cupertino company will launch an iPhone 5S alongside the 5C. The 5S should be the standard upgrade, with slightly enhanced specs. But one feature could make it stand out from previous models – it could come in a gold colour option. Don’t worry, it won’t be too bling. It’ll be a subtle champagne gold, the rumours say. And it’s not the only new colour we might see…

More colours

The iPhone 5C should be available in a range of colours, with numerous leaks showing its casing in red, green, blue, and more. So far, Apple has only offered the iPhone in muted tones, but its iPod range comes in a selection of bright colours. Its new operating system iOS 7 also went to town on the colour, so we could well see a brighter selection of products from Apple.Double the storage

The iPhone 5S will come with a beefy 128GB of storage, according to one analyst. Think that’s unheard of? Well the iPad currently comes with that much space. And it would make up for the lack of an SD card slot. The iPhone 5 comes in a 64GB variant, and most of us would welcome double the storage. Just maybe not the price tag that’ll come with it.

Fingerprint scanner

A few leaks have hinted we’ll see a fingerprint scanner on the next iPhone. This would be more secure than a PIN code, meaning no one else can access your handset. The feature has been used on laptops for a few years now, but has so far failed to become standard on mobiles. But where Apple goes, the rest usually follow…

It’ll run iOS 7

A given, this one. Apple unveiled its colourful new operating system a couple of months ago, but so far only developers have been able to get their hands on it. It’s sure to launch alongside the new handset(s), and will be available for the iPad, too. There’s a host of new features, like 3D, new messaging options, smart multitasking, and AirDrop. You can even control your device by moving your head. Now that’s what we call handsfree.

Phones, phones, phones!

Let’s kick things off with what could be the biggest day of the year for Apple. We’ve heard that the company will be hosting a special event on 10 September, and that’s set to be the next-gen iPhone’s big reveal. Expect to see the latest version of iOS in all its redesigned glory, plus we could even see a cheaper, low-cost model alongside the next flagship phone.

Canadian company BlackBerry is still hanging on, and it looks like the company’s jumping on the phablet bandwagon with an all-new BlackBerry 10 blower. Meet the leaked BlackBerry Z30, the biggest BlackBerry device we’ve ever seen, and it’s all-screen too meaning you won’t find a physical keyboard on this phone. If you’re a fan of QWERTY keys though, BlackBerry’s outed a brand new phone that has the looks of a classic BlackBerry, but there’s one slight problem: it has the same ancient software too.

Samsung’s also going all retro this week: say hello to the Samsung Hennessy, a dual screen Android phone that boasts flipping powers – just like your classic Motorola Razr. Fancy one of these?

A little on the odd side

We’ve seen the all-new Xbox One controller, and while it looks a lot like an updated Xbox 360 pad, it could have been a whole lot different. This week, Microsoft revealed that there could have even been smellovision packed into each controller, even going as far as testing out cartridges that belch out smells related to what’s happening on-screen. We think we’ll pass, and we’re glad Microsoft smelt sense too.

If you thought Nokia’s chunky Lumia 1020 came packing some insane camera smarts, wait until you get a load of this. Swiss company Hyetis is cramming a full 41-megapixel camera into a titanium-cased smartwatch called the Crossbow, and that’s not all it’s found space for: the watch also boasts GPS skills and biometric and temperature sensors. Could this be the James Bond watch of your dreams?

Projector-powered tech

Projectors are great for presentations, watching films and kicking back and playing games on, but what if they did more? Ubi Interactive just made your screen interactive, by combining Kinect smarts with your projector to turn any wall into a multitouch-enabled surface. Angry Birds on the office wall? Yes please!

If you’re after something a bit more portable, meet the tiny Epict EPP-100, a pico-projector that packs an Android brain and can fit right in your pocket, meaning you could have your own personal cinema wherever you are – plus all the Google apps you can handle.

We also got a good look at the brand new online multiplayer trailer for next month’s Grand Theft Auto V, and it looks nothing less than jawdropping. You may have seen iOS 7’s snazzy new look and natty new features, but chances are you haven’t seen all it can do. Apple didn’t demo all its new skills at the announcement, and it’s made developers sign a lip-buttoning non-disclosure agreement that swears them to secrecy. Well, it does in theory, anyway.

Plenty of developers have been only too happy to spill the beans, it seems, because since they got their hands on it, we know a lot more than Apple originally let on. So let’s take a look at what else Apple’s next operating system can do.

1 It can controlled hands-free

That’s right, using iOS 7, you’ll be able to control your iPhone or iPad using just your head. You can set functions to activate when you move your head to the left or the right. So a jerk to the left could be set to act as a touch on an icon, while one to the right can be used as the Home button. Switch on the option in the Settings menu, and the software will cycle through every icon on screen, highlighting each in turn. Just move your head to select whichever is highlighted, and there you go, hands-free controls!

2 The icons are alive

This one might remind you of Windows Phone 8’s Live Tiles, but that’s no bad thing. The icons on the home screen are animated, meaning you can see certain info at a glance. Need to check the time? The clock app ticks away right there on the home screen, so you don’t need to open the app. This also has the added bonus of making the home screen seem more alive, and less static than iOS 6.

3 It’s easier to find that crucial email

Apple has been hard at work adding colour to iOS 7. In fact, some might say it’s been a little heavy-handed with the paintbrushes. But in this case, the colour comes into its own. Every email in a conversation shows up in a different colour font to the last, so if you’re scrolling through a long email chain, it’s easy to see when someone new chips in. Which will make finding that crucial email easier than ever.

4 Maps acts as more of a satnav

Apple’s Maps was an unmitigated disaster when it launched, prompting Apple to publish an apology admitting it wasn’t up to scratch. But it’s gradually getting better. And with iOS 7, Apple has added some new satnav features to make it more useful than ever. You’ll be able to set your direction type to driving or walking, just like Google Maps. There’s no option for public transport yet, which Google Maps offers, but Apple could add it before iOS 7’s official launch.

5 It can zoom in while recording video

Fancy getting in closer to the action while you’re videoing? Now you can, with iOS 7. Despite the fact iOS products lack an optical zoom, you can still bring the action closer by just pinching the screen while you’re videoing. And there you go, you’re zooming in. Anyone using Vine or Instagram’s video service will no doubt find some creative uses for it.

Apple prepping 5.7-inch iPhone Galaxy Note rival!

 

The times, they are a-changing. Apple founder Steve Jobs once dismissed phones with large screens out of hand, but just days after the launch of Apple’s redesigned – and beautiful – iOS 7, a new report says the company is looking at a giant phablet iPhone running the software. Is this a Galaxy Note contender?

According to Reuters, Apple will be launching new iPhone models with bigger screens and different colours within the next year according to no fewer than four sources. Two screen sizes are currently being floated for release next year – a 4.7-inch iPhone with a screen roughly the same size as HTC’s One and Samsung’s Galaxy S4, and a massive 5.7-inch model that could dwarf even the epic Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Apple famously stuck with a 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone for years, even while its rivals ramped theirs up, making them better for watching video, browsing the web and even writing with a stylus, and only bumped the iPhone 5 display up to a modest four-inches diagonally late last year.

But this report suggests that Apple under CEO Tim Cook is having a change of heart after seeing Samsung’s gigantic Galaxy Note phones sell tens of millions, and rival efforts from Asus and Huawei follow in its wake. Clearly, there are enough shoppers out there who want a portable tablet that can act as a phone in worst case scenarios, even if it makes them look like a Dom Joly sketch in the process – and Apple want in.

Microsoft Office for iPhone arrives: That didn’t take long!

 

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally, finally here: Microsoft Office for iPhone. Well, sort of – though you can now edit your Word documents and PowerPoint presentations on the go without the need for a Windows Phone, there are still quite a few catches.

While Windows Phone users have been treated to the official Microsoft Office mobile experience for a few years now, this marks the software giant’s first foray onto iOS with its flagship office suite. Install it, and you can edit and create documents and spreadsheets, and edit PowerPoint slideshows you’ve already knocked up. All your work is stored safely for you in the cloud via Microsoft’s SkyDrive.

So what are the catches? Well, for starters, while it’s free to download, you’ll need to be an Office 365 subscriber to log in and use it (That’ll be £7.99 per month, please). This is also an iPhone-only app, so iPad users will have to make do with Microsoft’s web Office offerings, or rival services like Google Drive – ditto Android users.

If you’re OK with the fine print, you’ll be able to give Microsoft Office on your iPhone a go very soon: it’s on the iTunes App Store for US users right now, while us Brits should see it land within the next few days.

iPhone 6 to pack a 12-megapixel camera?

 

The Apple iPhone 6, the iPhone 5S. Whatever Apple plans to call it, you can bet a next-gen model is coming, and we’re starting to hear whispers of what we can expect to find inside it. According to a new report, it’s packing camera tech to take on the likes of HTC and Nokia, including a 12-megapixel camera with added low-light super powers. Fancy that in your next iOS blower?

A source at Wonderful Saigon Electrics, the Vietnamese branch of a Japanese company that supplies cameras for the iPhone, has revealed to the leak gurus at Tinhte.vn that the next-gen iPhone will come packing an improved camera, upping the eight-megapixel sensor inside the iPhone 5 to a whopping 12-megapixels.

If the source is right, you can expect a few other added imaging features too, such as improvement in low-light performance and HDR video recording, a feature that’s making its way to some of the higher end Android phones and greatly improves performance in shots of extreme brights and blacks.

The Vietnamese site has been bang on the money before: it posted a hands-on video of Apple’s new Earpods before they came out, and correctly predicted that the iPhone 5 would have an 8-megapixel camera too. Of course, it’s worth taking the rumour with a pinch of salt until Apple unveils the next iPhone, but we’ll keep you updated on all the news along the way.

iBeetle: Meet the new Volkswagen with a helping hand from Apple

 

While it’s not a fully-fledged own brand Apple iCar, Volkswagen’s come up with the next best thing, teaming up with Apple to create the iBeetle: a VW bug that’s had the full Apple treatment and syncs seamlessly with your iPhone!

The German car maker’s new Beetle pairs up with your iPhone and is the first VW car to boast an iPhone docking station right on the dashboard, which the auto-maker says was made in partnership with the tech giant.

There’s also an app – the curiously named Volkswagen Car Net The Beetle – that lets you sync either wirelessly or through the docking station and gives you access to Spotify and a whole host of car data such as a G-Meter, oil and temperature gauges and fuel economy info on the go. There are also social media features and even a camera option – most of which we wouldn’t recommend you use while driving!

The iBeetle rocks 18-inch alloys and sports the iBeetle signature on the door sills and chrome badges on the front. The Beetle and your blower join forces when the iBeetle goes on sale early next year, with advanced sales starting in October: it’ll come in both coupe and convertible variants in colours to match your iPhone 5.

Anyone for a trip down memory lane? Sporting hued-plastic cues from Apple’s iconic and classic iMac G3, one designer has mocked up what he thinks the rumoured new budget iPhone with a bigger screen could look like, and with some good reasons behind the design decisions too. Would you be interested in this colourful design?

We’ve seen lots of reports in recent months that Apple could be about to drop a budget-conscious iPhone sometime soon, and this concept gives us a visual based on those rumours. Designed by Nickolay Lamm on behalf of MyVoucherCodes, the budget concept fuses the look of the colourful new iPod touch models with the translucent plastic of Apple’s classic old iMacs – a style which would reduce manufacturing costs and offer a slick looking design at the same time.

In a bid to drop costs it would certainly make sense for Apple to go back to a plastic construction similar to the second and third generation iPhone, but freshened up with modern touches such as a Lightning connector and faster internals. Apple’s iPod touch range now comes in a kaleidoscopic range of hues, and it would make sense for the budget iPhone to have a few colour choices to follow suit – just like when the iPod mini first went on sale in 2004.

So long cracked screens: Your next iPhone can shift its fall like a cat

 

Drop your phone often? Apple’s got a new bit of tech for you, that could see your next iPhone make like a cat and shift its centre of balance to save itself as it falls. Say goodbye to cracked screens and hello to a feline-esque phone!

AppleInsider’s spotted the recent patent application filing, which describes a tiny gizmo in the phone that can detect when an iPhone or iPad is falling, and then – incredibly – shift over its centre of balance so that it doesn’t land on any of its most fragile parts, like a corner of the screen.

Instead of it landing, say, flat out on its beautiful Retina Display, your next iPhone will shift itself mid-air and land on a stronger part that doesn’t have so many essential components, such as a strong edge or a reinforced backside.

Although dropping it will likely still damage the phone, its mid air shift will help save some of its more expensive parts, so if it does need emergency treatment in the Genius Bar still, fixing it up would cost a whole lot less.

As ever with patent applications, it’s never certain that the company behind the idea will ever actually use it in a finished product. But given just how many people are living with a cracked screen – and the many anecdotal reports of Apple exchanging cracked iPhones for fresh ones, it’d certainly be a moneysaver for the California company.

Temple Run 2 dashes onto iPhone

 

Temple Run 2 sprinted onto the iPhone App Store , but Android users will be left waiting to get a dose of the sequel to the mobile gaming mega hit. But it looks like they won’t have to wait too long, as creator Imangi says the game is almost done and will hit the Google Play Store next week.

The sequel to the wildly successful running game cranks up the graphics and throws in bigger, more dastardly monkeys, along with new tricks straight out of the Temple of Doom like ziplines and mine carts. It’s still sporting the same fantastic price tag of the original game though: the low-low price of free.

While Android gamers only have a week to wait, Windows Phone owners are still left in the dry, with no sign of the original Temple Run in sight – despite promises from Microsoft.

It’s here! Google Maps brings free satnav to iPhone

 

It’s here, it’s here! The Google Maps iPhone app we’ve all been waiting for has arrived on the App Store. It’s everything we’ve been hoping for and more, bringing all that rock solid data, and even turn by turn navigation, to any iPhone released in the last three and a half years.

Google Maps for iPhone appeared as a free download on iTunes overnight, and will run on any iPhone 3GS or higher with iOS 5.1 and up. On first impressions, it’s been worth the wait: it’s clean, shockingly fast thanks to vector graphics and filled with all the data that Apple Maps was woefully missing. It even offers free turn by turn satnav directions, just like on Android.

The only things missing? Offline mapping you can download in advance as you can on Android, and support for iPad, coming later. Oh, and adverts, but we doubt you’ll be too upset about that.

For those who missed the furore earlier this year, Apple began using its own data and animation for its Maps app in iOS 6, ending a partnership with Google since the original iPhone. It didn’t work out: the pretty, woefully inaccurate Apple replacement was heavily criticised, forcing Apple CEO Tim Cook to make a rare public apology. The man in charge of iOS software, Scott Forstall, was subsequently forced out of the company, allegedly over Maps and other missteps.

Apple plans wireless charging zone for your next iPhone!

Apple’s mission to cut the cables out of your life continues. The tech giant recently filed a patent application that outlines a wireless hotspot, but not like you know it: instead, any devices in the area would get charged. Is this tech headed to the iPhone 6?

The application, entitled ‘wireless power utilisation in a local computing environment’, hints heavily that the folks at Cupertino are going for wireless charging within a select zone for the next iPhone.

Wireless charging is a great idea, one gaining some mainstream acceptance with the Nokia Lumia 920, freeing you from the jungle of wires that plagues desks, but the current real world options aren’t all that practical. Most of today’s wireless chargers still have wires, and use inductive charging, meaning the wireless charger and your phone need to be close together or touching.

Apple’s patent application uses a different approach to wireless charging. The scheme uses a near-field magnetic resonance (NFMR) power supply to charge up nearby devices that also have a NFMR resonator circuit built in. This, in theory, could power up and charge multiple devices such as mice, keyboards and multiple phones making everything wireless, battery-free and eco friendly too – so long as they’re all nearby. Handy.

But the reliance on magnets also means that it could mess with things such as flash memory or credit cards if they too get caught in the vicinity. We’ll still have to wait a few years before this could become a feasible reality, but at least Apple has got the idea down “just in case”. Think this is something awesome or something awful? The Sky+ iPhone app just got even smarter today, with the addition of a killer new feature that puts it on a par with the iPad app: remote control. Starting now, you can boss your Sky+ HD box about with your Apple blower – read on for all the details.

You could already manage your recordings and set them from afar with the Sky+ iPhone app, as well as browse an easy to use TV guide. But you can now bark orders to it with your iPhone, pausing live TV and rewinding it, and letting you view and edit your planner while watching a show on the big screen at the same time.

The Sky+ iPhone app update is a welcome move, especially since many more people own an iPhone or an iPod touch than an iPad still. But it’s not the only game in town. Phone 5 up for UK pre-order: Will you be buying?

The iPhone 5 is on sale a week today, but if you really want to be sure of landing one on day one, you don’t need to queue – pre-orders on several UK networks have opened already. Will you be getting one?

While EE and O2 are all keeping their cards close to their chest when it comes to iPhone 5 pricing, Three, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile UK have all put the iPhone 5 in all its flavours up for pre-order already.

Prices on contract at Orange and T-Mobile are almost identical, as you’d expect since they’re owned by the same company: the 16GB model starts at £109.99 on a £36 per month two year contract with 1GB of data.

Vodafone meanwhile has a slightly cheaper offer if you’re prepared to use less data on the go. You can get a 16GB iPhone 5 for £25 per month on a two year contract by paying £249 on contract. For the unlimited text and call package with 1GB of data though, you’re looking at £37 per month for £99 upfront.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 tipped for October release, iPhone in its sights

 

The Samsung Galaxy S3 may have already hit the stores as competition to the iPhone, but don’t think Samsung is stopping there. Another stab at the iPhone will see Samsung launch a second Galaxy Note, with a flexible display, thinner design, quad-core processor, and a 12-megapixel camera to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 5, says a report.



And forget Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The new Samsung Galaxy Note successor will instead run the new Android Jelly Bean operating system, says an MK Business News report. 
 Samsung is already enjoying huge success with its Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone – the most -pre-ordered phone so far this year is being tipped as many peoples phone of the year.

Wanting to build on that, it appears Samsung is hoping to spoil Apple’s party by launching the new Galaxy Note in October – around the same Apple is believed to be launching its new iPhone.

So what can we expect from a Samsung Galaxy Note 2? Rumoured specs include an ‘unbreakable plane display,’ said to be a flexible display, thinner in design to make room for a better processor inside.

The report also mentions a display said to exceed the 5.3-inches of the current Galaxy Note, burring the line between tablet and smartphone, a longer battery life, and a quad-core processor just like the Samsung Galaxy S3. And of course that new Jelly Bean operating system from launch.

Samsung has yet to confirm the above, but would it be fair to call a device exceeding 5.3-inches competition to an iPhone 5? It sounds more like a mini tablet to us.

A (rumoured) leaked iPhone 5 blueprint recently hinted that Apple will go with a 4-inch display for its new smartphone. That’s still over an inch less than the Samsung Galaxy Note, and nearly an inch smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S3’s 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen.
