Here we go! It’s another Friday, and that means it’s time for another dose of your weekly round-up of the best stories in tech. We’ve got phones galore, including some gossip on the next-gen iPhone as well as a pair of BlackBerry blowers and a retro-inspired Samsung phone. We’ve also spotted some ridiculous tech, from a watch with a huge camera, to plenty of projector tricks that’ll make your next presentation one to remember. All of the week’s hottest stories are right here in your Gadget Digest.

Phones, phones, phones!

Let’s kick things off with what could be the biggest day of the year for Apple. We’ve heard that the company will be hosting a special event on 10 September, and that’s set to be the next-gen iPhone’s big reveal. Expect to see the latest version of iOS in all its redesigned glory, plus we could even see a cheaper, low-cost model alongside the next flagship phone.

Canadian company BlackBerry is still hanging on, and it looks like the company’s jumping on the phablet bandwagon with an all-new BlackBerry 10 blower. Meet the leaked BlackBerry Z30, the biggest BlackBerry device we’ve ever seen, and it’s all-screen too meaning you won’t find a physical keyboard on this phone. If you’re a fan of QWERTY keys though, BlackBerry’s outed a brand new phone that has the looks of a classic BlackBerry, but there’s one slight problem: it has the same ancient software too.

Samsung’s also going all retro this week: say hello to the Samsung Hennessy, a dual screen Android phone that boasts flipping powers – just like your classic Motorola Razr. Fancy one of these?

A little on the odd side

We’ve seen the all-new Xbox One controller, and while it looks a lot like an updated Xbox 360 pad, it could have been a whole lot different. This week, Microsoft revealed that there could have even been smellovision packed into each controller, even going as far as testing out cartridges that belch out smells related to what’s happening on-screen. We think we’ll pass, and we’re glad Microsoft smelt sense too.

If you thought Nokia’s chunky Lumia 1020 came packing some insane camera smarts, wait until you get a load of this. Swiss company Hyetis is cramming a full 41-megapixel camera into a titanium-cased smartwatch called the Crossbow, and that’s not all it’s found space for: the watch also boasts GPS skills and biometric and temperature sensors. Could this be the James Bond watch of your dreams?

Projector-powered tech

Projectors are great for presentations, watching films and kicking back and playing games on, but what if they did more? Ubi Interactive just made your screen interactive, by combining Kinect smarts with your projector to turn any wall into a multitouch-enabled surface. Angry Birds on the office wall? Yes please!

If you’re after something a bit more portable, meet the tiny Epict EPP-100, a pico-projector that packs an Android brain and can fit right in your pocket, meaning you could have your own personal cinema wherever you are – plus all the Google apps you can handle.

Grand Theft Auto V multiplayer trailer revealed!

We also got a good look at the brand new online multiplayer trailer for next month’s Grand Theft Auto V, and it looks nothing less than jawdropping. We can’t wait to get stuck in to the massive gameworld and tear up Los Santos with friends, and we’re sure you can’t either. Watch the video below and start counting down the days to 17 September.

Huawei Ascend Y300: Incredible £60 Android phone hits the UK!

 

Smartphones just keep getting cheaper and cheaper, but while we’ve seen the odd Android phone for under £60 before, none have been quite as powerful as this. Meet the Huawei Ascend Y300, a new droid with a big screen and some serious internals, all for the tenth of the price of the Samsung Galaxy S4!

Up for an upgrade but don’t fancy breaking the bank? You could do far worse than the Huawei Ascend Y300, which packs in a four-inch display (the same size as the iPhone 5, no less), a zippy dual-core 1GHz processor, and speedy, app-packed Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Around the back, there’s a five megapixel camera, so you can get your Instagram and Vine on, as with any other pricier competitor.

We’ve seen a glut of cheap Android phones of late, from the beefy Huawei Ascend G510 to Vodafone’s smaller Smart III, but this might jsut be the best combination of price, specs and size yet.

Want in? The Huawei Ascend Y300 is out today with Carphone Warehouse, priced up at £59.95 on prepay for existing customers and £69.95 for newcomers, and from just £7.50 per month on contract.

BlackBerry R10 spotted: Is this the saviour of BB10?

 

Well hello there. Just days after the BlackBerry Q10 hit stores, bringing the buttons back with a vengeance, a follow up phone has leaked out online, promising a rock solid keyboard and BlackBerry 10 with a low price tag. Is this the phone that will keep BlackBerry alive?

CrackBerry spotted the BlackBerry R10 on Instagram. User tamarabatal appears to have snagged a dummy unit of the next-gen phone early. Based on the bright colours (Red, and a white model in the background), plastic materials and BlackBerry Curve style isolated keyboard, we’d say this will be a touchscreen BlackBerry 10 phone with a much cheaper pricetag – the premium Q10 costs more than £30 per month on a two year contract, or an eye-watering £579.95 SIM-free.

That’s a smart move on BlackBerry’s part, as though flagship phones are where there’s most money to be made, right now the company needs to get BlackBerry 10 into the hands of as many punters as possible, so that developers will get on board with the friendly but app-lacking new software. A cheap and cheery phone like the BlackBerry R10 might be just what the doctor ordered.

There’s no official launch date for this phone just yet, or a list of specs (though we’re guessing it skips the HD screen and 4G connection) but the tipster says it’ll ship “Q3” – sometime between July and September. It’s what we’ve all been waiting for: the Sony PS4. Just today, the Japanese gaming giant scheduled a big announcement for later this month, promising to show us the “future” – and sources are already confirming it will be the next PlayStation on show. What are you hoping to see from it/?

iOS 6: The jailbreak is back

Got an iPhone 5 or an iPad mini, but wishing you could unlock it to pimp it out to your heart’s content? BlackBerry 10: What to expect

 

RIM’s big BlackBerry 10 launch takes place tomorrow: years overdue, the company is finally overhauling its ageing software and prepping some slick new phones to go with it. All the news kicks off from 3pm, but ahead of that we’ve got a primer stuffed full of what to expect. Read on!

Hidden BlackBerry 10 features

BlackBerry 10’s basic structure is no secret by this point: while its homescreen of apps is fairly traditional, it stands out from the crowd with clever app switching from the top of the screen, and clever Work and Personal profiles to keep everything separate. But you can bet RIM’s got some extra flourishes to show off tomorrow, whether it’s more partners for its new app store or a new way to wirelessly stream your media, AirPlay style – or perhaps even BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone and Android.

Apps, apps, apps

RIM knows that BlackBerry 10 will live or die by its apps, and you can expect it’ll have some to talk about tomorrow. Rumours are flying that the store will launch with as many as 70,000 – certainly a lot more than Microsoft kicked off Windows Phone with two and a half years ago. It’s the big names that count though. Will it have persuaded the likes of Netflix and Instagram to jump onboard though? Time will tell.

The BlackBerry Z10

Of course, BlackBerry 10 needs new hardware to run on, and the BlackBerry Z10 is it. We’ve seen too many leaks of this touchscreen-only phone for it not to be real by this point: its leather-style back and completely buttonless front look stylish from what we’ve seen. Here’s hoping it’s as hyper-speedy as the iPhone 5 and the latest Android blowers however.

A QWERTY cousin too

The BlackBerry is the BlackBerry because of its keyboard, of course, and RIM’s not forgotten this. We’ve also seen leaks of another new BlackBerry 10 smartphone with a Bold-style design and QWERTY panel on the front, and the company confirmed it’ll be launching tomorrow earlier this month. Can it bring the lowly button back into fashion?

A new PlayBook tablet

It’s been year since RIM launched its iPad wannabe, the BlackBerry PlayBook. Perhaps with the launch of its new OS, it’s time to return to the world of slates once more? We’ve not heard any rumours about a new RIM tablet due tomorrow so far, but anything’s possible – and with so many apps right out of the box, this one could escape the originals’ digital photo frame fate.

An embarrassing launch video

While BlackBerry 10 looks promising, there’s no denying the Canadian company lacks some of say, Apple’s cool. From the CEO’s promise to “rock and roll this” to the cringe-worthy music video aimed to tempt developers over to BlackBerry below, RIM is the tech equivalent of your dad announcing he’s just discovered the Arctic Monkeys. BlackBerry 10 phone with a QWERTY keyboard out this month!

 

RIM’s big BlackBerry 10 launch takes place on 30 January, and fresh off the back of news about the thousands of apps prepped for launch, we’ve got even more to get excited about: the Canadian company’s confirmed that a new BlackBerry with a traditional QWERTY keyboard will be on show too!

RIM has promised that die hard BlackBerry addicts will get BlackBerry 10 blowers with a tactile keyboard for blitzing out emails, but now we know when. In an interview with Vodafone Social, Bob El-Hawary, senior director of channel accounts at RIM, revealed the folks in Waterloo “will also be announcing a physical keyboard device”.

That’s good news for fans of the rock solid BlackBerry keyboard, as most of the leaks have centred on the touchscreen-only model expected to debut on the 30th, and RIM released two prototypes to developers before outing one with a keyboard. While we knew one was coming, we didn’t expect it quite so soon.

El-Hawary also goes on to promise that BlackBerry 10 phones will be on the “the leading edge of battery power” – great news if you’re sick and tired of your Android or iPhone tanking out at lunchtime from too much push email.

Confirmed: BlackBerry 10 coming to the UK next year!

 

It’s official. While we knew that BlackBerry 10 would be launching on 30 January, the UK’s biggest networks and retailers have all announced that they’ll be stocking RIM’s latest BlackBerry handsets running BlackBerry 10. If you’re still waiting on a solid rival to iOS, Android and Windows Phone, your time might have just come.

Phones 4u, The Carphone Warehouse, EE, Three and Vodafone have each stated that they’ll be carrying RIM’s latest and greatest BlackBerry 10 blowers, but details are scarce on actual pricing or even what kind of handset will be launched to the public first. Missing from that list: O2, though that doesn’t mean it won’t join the party at some point.

BlackBerry 10 contains a whole host of updates to the ageing platform that should bring it up to date, including an updated keyboard, a voice commands feature that is similar to Siri as well as a totally overhauled interface. Is it too little, too late for RIM or will BlackBerry 10 be enough to sway away current iPhone and Android users? Let us know what you think in the comments.

BlackBerry 10 smartphones delayed till 2013, is it game over?

 

Earlier this week RIM confirmed that the first BlackBerry 10 device will swap the keyboard for a touchscreen. Now the company has announced we won’t be seeing the new BlackBerry handsets until early 2013. The news comes amid growing troubles for the company. It sounds like BlackBerry fans will have to be very patient. But will 2013 be too late for the new handsets? More this way. 



RIM had hoped to introduce the new and improved BlackBerry 10 interface and smartphones by the end of this year, but it seems even RIM underestimated how long development would take. The phones now won’t be arriving until 2013, Thorsten Heins, President and CEO of RIM confirmed.

“Our top priority going forward is the successful launch of our first BlackBerry 10 device, which we now anticipate will occur in the first quarter of calendar 2013,” he said (via Marketwatch).

Despite falling revenues, and job cuts, Heins promised that BlackBerry 10 is at the top of the company’s to do list. “The successful launch of the BlackBerry 10 platform and the delivery of high quality, full-featured BlackBerry 10 smartphones remain the Company’s number one priority.

“Over the past several weeks, RIM’s software development teams have made major progress in the development of key features for the BlackBerry 10 platform…”It’s just taken a little longer than expected.

“The integration of these features and the associated large volume of code into the platform has proven to be more time consuming than anticipated.” So 2013 it is.

“RIM’s development teams are relentlessly focussed on ensuring the quality and reliability of the platform and I will not compromise the product by delivering it before it is ready,” the CEO promised. “I am confident that the first BlackBerry 10 smartphones will provide a ground-breaking next generation smartphone user experience.”

That is at least some crumb of comfort for those awaiting the release of BlackBerry 10, but with its own troubles afflicting the company, RIM, and BlackBerry 10 will need to go some way to convincing fans of Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS and Microsoft’s Windows Phone to be tempted away, especially with the prospect of a new iPhone on the horizon. RIM is doing its hardest, but will 2013 could be too late.

The Asus Padfone is a 4.3-inch smartphone that, when docked mutates into a fully-fledged 10-inch tablet. Top 5 smartphone launches we're excited about

Is the smartphone in your hand starting to look a little dated, a little slow and frankly a little 2011? Well, there are some pretty amazing smartphones set to launch and here we take a look in the crystal ball and predict when we’ll see them on the high-street.

If 2011 was all about the battle between Android versus Apple (expect to see a repeat some time this year as the Apple iPhone 5 rumours kick start again), 2012 is all about size as three of our favourite smartphones for 2012 all turn up sporting an over-sized jacket. LG Prada 3.0
The LG Prada Phone 3.0 itself has a 4.3-inch display, 1GHz dual-coreprocessor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage for photos, videos, apps and more. An 8-megapixel rear camera for photos and 1.3-megapixel camera for video calls, and the aforementioned Android operating system round up the features. Delayed from December, expect the Prada 3.0 to hit in February.


BlackBerry Bold 9790
The BlackBerry Bold 9790 will feature the latest BlackBerry 7 operating system, and have a 1GHz processor, which should make for a fast, yet smooth performance. You’ll be able to make the most of the high-resolution 2.45-inch touchscreen display with BlackBerry’s optical trackpad and QWERTY keyboard. Expected to hit in April


Sony Xperia S
The Sony Xperia S looks like it will be one of the must-have devices of 2012. Rocking up with a 4.3-inch screen, something we’ll see a lot of this year, you’ll also feel all David Bailey with its huge 12.1MP camera that gives perfect photos, while the 1.5GHz dual-core processor means this Android smartphone is as fast as it is lean. No official launch date yet but we’re thinking March would be a good launch time.


Nokia Lumia 900
Nokia is making a great deal of noise with its Windows Phone range and while the Nokia Lumia 900 has only been announced for the US to-date, we’re pretty sure the Finns will be bringing it to the UK too. This 4.3-inch monster has the looks and style of the smaller Lumia 800, but you’ll find a front-facing camera and all the extras we’ve come to expect from Nokia, such as great maps, music and camera. Pundits have put this down as a June launch for the big Windows Phone.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 on sale after just one week of pre-orders

It’s not even been a week since RIM’s BlackBerry Bold 9900 popped up for pre-order with Vodafone, but the company’s range-topping handset is now available to buy in the UK. If a proper keyboard is important to you, and you’re not interested in downloading thousands of apps, it could well be worth a look.

With a 2.8-inch screen that’s nearly square, and a large QWERTY keypad, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 looks like most previous BlackBerry iterations. There’s a difference when it comes to the specs, however, with a speedy 1.2GHz processor, 768MB of memory and RIM’s brand new BlackBerry OS 7 operating system in place.

The 9900 also gets a touchscreen display, letting you navigate the OS and web pages without having to resort to the optical pad.

You can now get your hands on the BlackBerry Bold 9900, which also features 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, with prices starting at £41 for a “free” handset. Pay an initial £99 fee, and the price drops to £36 per month. If you want Vodafone’s cheapest £20 tariff, however, you’ll have to pay a hefty £399

RIM unveils new touchscreen BlackBerry smartphones

This morning saw the announcement of three new BlackBerry handsets, including a new BlackBerry Bold and two new touchscreen BlackBerry Torch models. Running the latest version of RIM’s BlackBerry OS, and with powerful specifications, can they be the handsets to take on Android and Apple?

The most striking model of the three is the new BlackBerry Torch 9860, featuring a large and vivid 3.8-inch touchscreen. This is the handset that RIM hopes will take on the Samsung Galaxy S IIs of the world, and with a fast 1.2GHz processor and new BB OS7 operating system it should be the company’s best pure touchscreen smartphone yet.

Regular BlackBerry users will probably prefer the Torch 9810 or Bold 9930, however, which both feature RIM’s excellent keyboard. The 9810 still gets a decent 3.2-inch touchscreen and the same processor as the 9860, but you’ll also be able to hammer out long emails or edit documents where necessary.

No matter how good hybrid or straight-up touchscreen smartphones get, however, some users will still love a traditional handset, which is where the Bold 9930 will appeal. It has the biggest keyboard of the three, and is perfectly suited (as always) to corporate users. It also gets a touch sensitive screen, however, making it easier to navigate the new OS or browse web pages.

RIM unveils new touchscreen BlackBerry smartphones by The Gadget Show

BlackBerry Bold 9930 on its way soon

The BlackBerry Bold 9930 is one of the latest smartphones to be announced by RIM, but the handset has now appeared on network provider Verizon’s website as well. With a launch expected this summer, it looks like the Bold 9930 could be just around the corner.

If you’re a fan of the traditional BlackBerry form factor, the latest BlackBerry Bold 9930 should be right up your street. The excellent QWERTY keypad is present and correct, the usual Bold styling is still familiar – in short, there are no surprises.

Along with the impressive keyboard, the Bold now gets a touchscreen display as well. This promises to make it much easier to navigate long emails or web pages with the flick of a finger – without losing out on functionality. The Bold also gets pinch to zoom, bringing it in line with the iPhone 4 and Android smartphones.

Other specs on the Bold 9930 are suitably high end, including a 1.2GHz processor and that 2.8-inch touchscreen. There’s 8GB of integrated memory, with support for up to 32GB via microSD card.
The Bold 9930 was officially announced back in May, and was expected to hit the shops this summer. Appearing on Verizon’s website in the US, hopefully the Bold will be available this side of the Atlantic in the coming weeks. Prices have yet to be announced.

BlackBerry PlayBook: Five killer features!

RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook has been on sale for under a week in the UK, yet already it’s proving more popular than established rivals like the Motorola Xoom. In fact, worldwide, the PlayBook has sold twice as many units as the Xoom in the same amount of time. Read on to find out more about some of the PlayBook’s killer features.

SizeThe Motorola Xoom’s 10.1-inch widescreen display may be perfect for watching movies in the home, or browsing the internet on your sofa, but it can’t match the PlayBook’s 7-inch screen when it comes to a life on the road. The PlayBook’s display is still large enough to do everything in comfort, but the extra portability makes it easier to take out and about with you.

Brand loyaltyThe BlackBerry PlayBook has one feature the Motorola Xoom would kill for, and that’s brand loyalty. Millions of people already use BlackBerry devices, both at home and at work, and many of these users are more than happy with their BlackBerry. It makes sense to stick with the brand they know then, especially when the PlayBook is designed to work perfectly alongside their BlackBerry smartphones.

Operating systemWe love Android as an operating system, but we can’t help but feel that it’s still aimed more at smartphones than tablets. The BlackBerry PlayBook features a unique QNX operating system, setting it apart from rivals and offering a truly different user experience.

Multi-taskingThe BlackBerry PlayBook is the ideal corporate tablet (despite the name), boasting more than enough power to work on the move. The 1GHz processor is a dual-core chip, and is aided by 1GB of memory. RIM has also designed its tablet to carry out symmetric multi-processing, making it one of the best when it comes to multi-tasking.

Email supportIf you already use a BlackBerry for work, then the BlackBerry PlayBook should be the perfect device for checking your emails on the go. It pairs effortlessly with your BlackBerry, offering full compatibility with RIM’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Since the launch of the Apple iPhone and iPad, however, both have found things a lot more difficult, with users switching to mobile phones for casual gaming.

Before the Apple iPhone, if you wanted to play games on a portable platform, the Sony PSP or Nintendo 3DS were the handhelds to have. Mobile phones have come on in leaps and bounds in the past few years, however, with mobile gaming now proving a popular attraction.

And, with users turning their attention to portable games, it appears that Apple is coming out on top. A survey by market research company Nielsen has shown that Apple users spend nearly twice as much time playing games as those with Android, spending just under 15 hours per month playing Angry Birds and other titles.

On average, Android users spend nine hours playing games, with Windows Phone users playing titles for just under five hours. Even BlackBerry owners are getting in on the action, with the business-aimed handsets used for around four and a half hours each month for games.
