Colourful iPhones, Google Glass updates, bargain tablets and more

Colourful iPhones, Google Glass updates, bargain tablets and more: Gadget Digest

Another week, another Friday, another gadget digest to catch you up on everything you might have missed in the world of tech this week! We’ve spied an all new budget iPhone, got a look at the next big Google Glass update, jumped into the hot seat with Gran Turismo 6, spotted the tablet bargain of the year and more! Read on for all the best news from this week in your gadget digest.

Is this the super cheap, kaleidoscopic new iPhone?

Still waiting for the iPhone to get cheaper? You might be in luck, but in a different way, as we spotted a leak of a few bright iPhone shells that signal the fabled budget iPhone is on its way. Is this your gateway to finally grabbing an iPhone?

Google Glass gets updated with head bobbing, web browsing tricks!

While you might call Google’s futuristic headgear bonkers, it’s still an incredible piece of kit, and it just got a massive update. You can now surf the web with a full-on browser in your eye, and you can pan around a page just by moving your head. The future is here, and Google’s leading the charge, or at least making you behave oddly public.

Jump into the driving seat with Gran Turismo 6 and win a job as a race driver!

Start your engines! Well, your PlayStations, as the demo for the latest in the Gran Turismo series has touched down on the PlayStation Network – and you could win a job as a race car driver! Fire up your PS3 and you’ll find the GT6 ready for download, and once you’re in game, if you hit a fast enough time, you could win a spot on the Nissan racing team. Not bad for picking up your joypad, right?

Nook HD gets slashed to £99 – is this your gadget bargain of the year?

Right after Barnes & Noble dropped down the price of its eInk e-readers, it’s gone and done it again – only this time, it’s the company’s full-fledged Android tablets on the receiving end. For only a limited time, you can now pick up a Nook HD for a bargain £99, while its bigger brother, the Nook HD+ can be yours for as little as £140. You get some impressive specs for your cash: the Nook HD’s insane 1440×900 display which is still the best screen on that size tablet. We’ll take two, thanks.

Is Apple planning a bezel-less range of iDevices?

Ever wished your iPad didn’t have a bezel and that it was all screen? You may be in luck, as a recent successful patent application could see you getting exactly that. Apple’s newly awarded patent outlines the tech that would turn the screen itself into a bezel if needed. Are you ready for a next-gen iPad?

Next-gen Xbox Live encourages you to play nice!

Xbox Live has 46 million players on it, but within that huge number, there’s bound to be a few trolls lurking behind their headsets and gamepads. Don’t worry about playing against them on Xbox One though, as Microsoft has got some next-gen tweaks for its Rep system that encourages gamers to play nice – or risk getting stuck with other trolls. Sound good?

Samsung Galaxy S4 unleashed, brand new rivals reviewed, and next-generation PCs:

Samsung Galaxy S4 unleashed, brand new rivals reviewed, and next-generation PCs: Gadget Digest

It’s been another epic week for tech fans, with brand new gadgets to play with, and one monster new flagship phone. We wouldn’t blame you if you struggled to stay on top of it all. Luckily, our Gadget Digest roundup is here to help: read on for everything you missed.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 arrives

The rumours were swirling for months, but at long last, it’s finally here: the Samsung Galaxy S4. Samsung unleashed the new Android super phone at a press event in New York last night, and it didn’t disappoint: it’s specced out to the max, and comes running some clever new software too, with a universal translator on board, as well as a feature that pauses videos for you when you look away from the screen. That’s not all either: the South Korean tech titan also served up a bunch of insane accessories, from a game pad to a wireless weighing scale.

Next-gen PCs galore

It’s been a big week for desktop computing too. Xi3, the company behind the tiny Piston gaming rig that’s been dubbed the first unofficial Steam Box, thanks to Valve’s involvement in its creation, put the device up for pre-order – though at $1,000, it might not have Sony and Microsoft too worried for their own consoles. Dell meanwhile unleashed its own bizarre desktop all in one PC, which doubles up as a gigantic, foot and a half long Windows tablet. Speaking of Windows, Apple did Mac users a solid and updated OS X to allow for Windows 8 installs – is the MacBook Air now the best Ultrabook?

Up close with the HTC One

It’s not just the Samsung Galaxy S4 we got to grips with this week: we also posted our full review of its new rival, the HTC One. Can the Taiwanese company’s all-metal Android monster phone and its UltraPixel give Samsung and Apple a run for their money? Check out our verdict to find out.

Chrome OS gets super charged

Google too has been hitting the headlines this week. Just days after we reviewed the beautiful Chromebook Pixel laptop, Android boss Andy Rubin stepped down. The search giant revealed that his job would be taken over by the company’s Chrome and Chrome OS boss – which got us wondering. Is Google’s lightweight laptop software about to get an influx of Android apps? Now that really should have Microsoft scared.

The Android smartwatch, Xbox 720, DIY media streamers and more:

The Android smartwatch, Xbox 720, DIY media streamers and more: Gadget Digest

The week is almost over, but the tech news just keeps on coming. New phones, new TVs, even whole new categories of gadgets – and we wouldn’t blame you if you haven’t been able to keep up with it all. Read on for all the biggest headlines of the week in one place: it’s your Gadget Digest.

Tick tock: Android smartwatches are coming

It’s not just Apple that’s working on an iWatch. This week, two of the tech titans also revealed that they were working on smartwatches, which will pair with your smartphone and serve you up all your important notifications for you at a glance. Samsung’s mobile boss went on the record to confirm its plans, while a report from a source revealed Google’s own Android-powered timepiece intentions. Will anybody crack the Dick Tracy smartwatch?

Next-gen gaming tech

Good and bads news from the bleeding edge of gaming tech this week. On the one hand, it’s looking more and more likely that Microsoft’s next Xbox will not let you play used games. On the other, the incredible Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles are starting to get some real traction, with Valve throwing its weight behind it and adding support in Team Fortress 2 – check out our guide on the next-gen goggles to find out more.

Fitness bands cometh

It’s the new trend in gadgetry: wearable fitness tech. This week, Jawbone finally brought its Up wrist band to the UK, but it’s got a lot of competition. We took a look at all the smart, slick pedometer wrist straps on sale right now to find out which one is for you.

Something for the weekend…

Here’s a slightly different project for you to try this weekend: make your own super-cheap HD media streamer. With just a Raspberry Pi and a few pieces of free software, you can give your old TV brand new smart TV skills, streaming music and video from your computer to your living room, and even pulling down on-demand movies and TV from the web. Have a go, and let us know how you get on.

The PlayStation 4 unleashed, HTC One arrives and more:

The PlayStation 4 unleashed, HTC One arrives and more: Gadget Digest

Weeks like this come along only a few times every generation – console generation, that is. Sony whipped the covers off the Sony PlayStation 4 at long last, but that wasn’t all that happened this week – and when it comes to gizmo news, February’s barely even started. Read on for everything you missed this week.

The Sony PlayStation 4 revealed – sort of

At long last, it arrived – sort of. Sony execs took the stage in New York to reveal the next-generation PS4’s incredible hardware under the bonnet – and we where there live. While the gaming giant was happy to show off lots of new gamers for the system – see them all here – it was less keen to reveal the design of the machine itself, choosing instead to focus on its impressive network skills and instant streaming abilities. Expect plenty more to come from the company in the next few months.

Is the HTC One the one?

Just a day before Sony’s big announcement, HTC had one of its own to share: its new flagship smartphone for 2013, the HTC One. It’s packing some impressive hardware, from a HD screen to a stunning new camera – even the ability to act as your TV remote. Has it got what it takes to compete with Samsung this year?

Google gets the style

Google’s not exactly known for design flair – more its engineering prowess. That looks to be changing this week. First, we got word that it’s teamed up with some seriously stylish sunglass designers to create a pair of Google Glass specs that you’ll actually want to be seen wearing. Then it followed up by unleashing the stunning Chromebook Pixel, a super-charged Chrome OS laptop that’s as beautiful as it is expensive. Is it too much for what’s essentially a web browser?

More on the way

Though we’ve seen two massive tech launches this week, February’s far from over. Next week, the giant smartphone expo Mobile World Congress returns to Barcelona. We’re expecting phones and tablets and more phones – Orange has jumped the gun and shown off its new 4G blower already – and Nokia’s press conference on Monday morning promises to be the highlight of the show, so tune in then for all the news.

Samsung’s iPad mini rival, Nokia strikes back and more

Samsung’s iPad mini rival, Nokia strikes back and more: Gadget Digest

CES is just a distant memory now – and that means it’s time once more for new gadgets. They’ve been coming in thick and fast this week, and we’ve been covering them all: read on for the juiciest gizmo highlights right here in your Gadget Digest.

Samsung’s tablet plans

Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is just weeks away now, and we’re expecting big things from Samsung at the show, if this week’s reports are to be believed. Not only is Samsung working on a new seven-inch tablet with a shockingly low pricetag to take on the Google Nexus 7, it’s got an eight-inch number on the way too, aimed squarely at would-be iPad mini shoppers.

A new dawn for Nokia

Nokia’s been struggling to adjust to the new world of app-tastic touchscreen smartphones, but it looks like it’s finally found its feet. It’s now making a profit once more – and this week, it confirmed it’s also finally ditched Symbian, the software that made it a giant, and brought it to its knees. We took a trip down memory lane to remember the greatest, most important Symbian phones the Finns ever made.

Samsung Galaxy S4 on the way

Apple’s likely going to keep us waiting until the end of the year for the next iPhone, but Samsung might have something much sooner: rumours are ramping up that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is just a month or two away from launch. Several sources popped up this week claiming just that – and that it’ll come with wireless charging too. Is this your next phone?

Games galore, Google’s new laptops, BlackBerry 10 and more:

Games galore, Google’s new laptops, BlackBerry 10 and more: Gadget Digest

The snow is falling, but not as fast as the gadget news is coming pouring on in. If you’ve not been able to keep up with it all, don’t worry: we’ve got all the biggest stories of the week rounded up for you in one place. Read on for your Gadget Digest.

Chrome OS Invasion

Last week saw a glut of new Windows 8 machines at CES, but this week, Google hit back, with several of its partners announcing new Chrome OS powered machines that cost a fraction of the price of an Ultrabook. Samsung pimped out its Chromebox desktop with newer, faster specs, while Lenovo turned heads with its very first ThinkPad running the web-based operating system. Is this the netbook replacement we’ve been dreaming of?

New games and ways to play

Gaming fans had lots to get their teeth – and fingers – into this week. We set live our full Dmc: Devil May Cry review, while the eagerly awaited Temple Run 2 dashed onto iPhone. And if you can’t wait for Nvidia’s Project Shield handheld gaming console, we took a look at the ways you can stream powerful PC games to your phone or tablet on the go right now.

RIM gears up for BB10 launch

Research In Motion’s planning to make its big smartphone comeback at the end of the month, with its BlackBerry 10 platform launch on the 30th. Ahead of the unveiling, we took a look at the apps RIM desperately needs to stand a chance against iOS, Android and Windows Phone, while we also heard that an old-school, QWERTY BlackBerry will be announced on the day.

Social networks get new skills

It’s been a big week for social networks. Facebook summoned the world’s press to its HQ to announced a brand new search engine that should have Google scared, while it slipped out something almost as important on the down-low: free phone calls for life via its Messenger app. It wasn’t just Facebook with news to share though. Remember MySpace? It came back with a bang, going live to the public with a new design and focus on music. Can it ever get back to its glory days?

Gadget Digest: iPad 4G, the world’s smartest smart TV and the Sony PS3 returns

Gadget Digest: iPad 4G, the world’s smartest smart TV and the Sony PS3 returns

It’s been another busy week in gadget gossip. We’ve seen all sorts of new gizmos roll off the factory line and onto our wishlists – so many, we wouldn’t blame you if you struggled to keep count. Luckily, we’re here to break them down for you into easy to swallow tech titbits: read on for this week’s Gadget Digest.

Android happenings

The iPhone 5 is out and clearing house, but the Google Android-powered rivals keep coming through thick and fast still. The rumours of an LG Nexus 4 super phone are reaching a crescendo, and there’s even talk of a release date this month. Meanwhile, Samsung outed the Galaxy S3 Mini, a smaller version of its Android phone, while HTC’s mid-range rival, the Desire X, hit shops shelves.

Smart TVs get smarter

Smart TVs got a few more IQ points this week courtesy of a couple of new launches. Spotify’s unlimited music streaming service arrived on Samsung TVs, complete with a free month’s trial worth a tenner, while Bang & Olufsen hit back once more with the world’s slickest, and perhaps also priciest, internet telly.

Tablet attack

Lots of tasty tablet gossip hit this week too. While the iPad Mini failed to show, we did get word that the next iPad will work on UK 4G super speed networks, while on the Android side of things, a new report suggested a £60 Google Nexus tablet is on the way.

Sony strikes back

We’re still waiting on that elusive PlayStation 4, but in the meantime, Sony’s seen fit to bless us with a newer, slimmer PS3, and this week, we set loose our full review of the console. Be sure to check it out if you’re still sitting on the console fence: while the software is ace, it’s not quite the cost cutting exercise we were hoping for.

Behind the scenes with Prometheus

Last but not least, the biggest film of the year for gadget fiends, Prometheus, hit Blu-ray. We went behind the scenes to find out more about the making of it: does the plot make any more sense now?

iPhone 5 revelations, the new Xbox and Android updates aplenty: Gadget Digest

iPhone 5 revelations, the new Xbox and Android updates aplenty: Gadget Digest

It’s Friday, and that means it’ll soon be time to mosey on over to the watering hole. And here to fuel you with tech talking points is Gadget Digest, our weekly round up of all the biggest stories in gadgets, gaming and tech.

We’ve got the word on everything from the iPhone 5 to a new Xbox and a software upgrade for your favourite phone. Read on for it all!

iPhone 5 details

With the rumoured September launch date closing in, iPhone 5 rumours and reports have been ramping up. We’ve heard some particularly juicy ones this week: first off, battery parts leaked from manufacturers in China appear to suggest that a super speedy 4G LTE connection inside the iPhone 5 is a real possibility. Then there’s damning evidence of that bigger screen: actual software support for a taller resolution panel hidden inside an Apple iOS simulator used by developers. Apple’s keynote can’t come soon enough.

New tablets galore

Christmas is always a big selling time for consumer gadgets, so the months before it are flush with new gear, and the last week has seen plenty of tablets. Samsung made its new Galaxy Note 10.1 Android tablet official, while we saw a major leak from Sony, which appears to be prepping a rival Xperia Google tablet for next month. Lenovo meanwhile went official with its first Windows 8 tablet, the ThinkPad Tablet 2.

New Xbox: Will they, won’t they?

We all know there’s a new Xbox in the works – Microsoft would be mad not to have one – but this week’s seen a bizarre game of confirmation and anti-confirmation. After a Microsoft representative mentioned a “new Xbox” to The Verge, the company’s spin doctors got to work, claiming that he was simply referring to the new dashboard update expected this Autumn. Sure guys, sure.

Ouya comes of age

Ouya, the Android-powered mini console that’s become a sensation on crowdfunding website Kickstarter, found plenty more backers this week to prove naysayers wrong. The creators of popular media centre software XBMC announced they would be supporting the platform, and the initial round of funding on Kickstarter closed with a staggering $8,596,475 (£5.5m) raised – quite a bit more than the $950,000 the Ouya team originally asked for. It’s not too late to get one though if you missed out: you can now pre-order one for the retail price of $109 (£70).

Android updates

This week brought reports that manufacturers are hard at work putting the latest version of Google’s popular mobile operating system, Android, on their phones. Samsung is reportedly close to finishing a build of Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” for the Samsung Galaxy S3, and working on a possible release for last year’s critically acclaimed Galaxy S2 as well. A leaked firmware update from HTC meanwhile shows it’s about to give the HTC One X a major speed boost – and it’s already no slouch.

YouView internet TV hits UK, Samsung Galaxy S3 problems, iPad Mini gossip and more

YouView internet TV hits UK, Samsung Galaxy S3 problems, iPad Mini gossip and more

Welcome to our weekly gadget digest. Here we round up the stories you might have missed, or fell under the gadget radar. Today we have stories on the YouView internet TV service that launched this week, word of Samsung Galaxy S3 overheating problems, some juicy gaming news and more.

YouView internet TV service coming this month

The YouView box has arrived in the UK. Together with its Internet TV service, YouView delivers the benefit of Freeview channels with online on-demand television shows, backed by Channel Five, BBC, ITV, and more. For £299, owners are able to view, pause, and record TV shows to its 500GB storage. The YouView service will be here in July.

Samsung Galaxy S3 overheating problems

A number of Samsung Galaxy S3 owners have been complaining of problems with their device, some of which include overheating problems, and problems charging the Android smartphone. Have you had any problems with your Samsung Galaxy S3? Let us know

Here comes the iPad Mini rumours

Rumours of a miniature iPad have been doing the rounds for a while now, and they appear to be picking up. Apple has in the past suggested that smaller tablets are inferior – an unnecessary compromise between a smartphone and tablet, without being either, but still the rumours persist. Google recently unveiled the 7-inch Google Nexus 7 tablet, so maybe 7-inch tablets are the way to go.

Following its recent launch, Virgin Media’s Wi-Fi service is now serving 41 London Underground stations, letting users check emails, read their favorite webpages and check their Facebook while waiting for their train until this summer. After that the Wi-Fi will still be in action, but will be restricted to the TFL (Transport for London) portal with travel information and London news. Up to 120 stations will have Wi-Fi by the end of 2012.

Nintendo Wii U to have free and premium subscription services

Nintendo president Saroru Iwata has suggested that, like the PS3 and Xbox 360, the Wii U will have both free and premium online services, also promising that owners won’t have to pay to access the most basic features. “We cannot promise that Nintendo will always provide you with online services free of charge no matter how deep the experiences are that it may provide,” he said. “But at least we are not thinking of asking our consumers to pay money to just casually get access to our ordinary online services.”

Microsoft making a Phone, new Gears of War, Google Play movies, this week's must-have download and more by

Microsoft making a Phone, new Gears of War, Google Play movies, this week's must-have download and more

Happy Friday, gadget fans. It’s that time of the week where we round up some of the week’s gadget and gaming stories that you may have missed. This week we’ve got the latest news on those rumoured Microsoft smartphones, a release date for the new Gears of War: Judgement game for Xbox 360, and more. Read on to see what else you’ve missed.

Grab a cheap PlayStation Vita

Well, cheaper. GameStop has discounted the Wi-Fi PlayStation Vita to just £189.97 – that’s £30 cheaper than you’ll find on other websites. If you’ve been thinking of picking up a Vita, it’s worth thinking about – the Vita is a great console.

Microsoft won’t be making a Windows Phone

Microsoft has been busy of late showing off its new Microsoft Surface tablet, but don’t expect the company to apply that same strategy to smartphones. It won’t be happening. At least not anytime soon. It looks like Microsoft is content to continue dabbling in Windows Phone software with Nokia instead.

Is Gears of War: Judgement out in February

That’s the rumour spreading around the web, so be sure to put it in your calendar. Gear of War: Judgement is a prequel to the popular series, starring familiar Gears characters Damon Baird and Augustus Cole. It’s gonna be good.

Google Play adds movies & TV shows

Google Play, formerly known as the Android Market, has added movies and TV shows to its repertoire of apps and games to go with the new Asus Google Nexus tablet that was launched earlier this week. If you haven’t already done so, go and check out the online store now.

This week’s must download: Stick Tennis

Just in time for Wimbledon, Stick Tennis has landed on Apple’s App Store for your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. It’s a neat little sporty number in which you play shots by swiping across the screen. A free version is available, so give it a go. If you like it, the full version costs £1.99. An Android version will be available in the coming weeks.
