If you thought smartphones were already insanely turbo-charged, wait until you get a load of this insane Android phone out of Russia. Called the YotaPhone, it’s packing Google’s mobile OS on a HD LCD screen…and an eInk screen on the back like a Kindle.
Engadget has the details on Yota Devices’ YotaPhone, an Android phone with a twist. It sports a 720p 4.3-inch screen on the front, and a quad-core processor in line with rivals, but there’s a black and white e-reader screen on the reverse of the phone too.
It sounds mad, but it could be genius: eInk screens use far, far less battery than LCD panels since they don’t need a backlight (It’s why your Kindle runs for months, rather than hours, on a charge). And developers can make their apps work with the YotaPhone so that must-read information can appear on the e-Ink screen for glance and go use.
The YotaPhone is currently at the prototype stage, and should go on sale in Russia sometime in later summer next year. We’ll keep you posted on a wider European release, but in the meantime, let us know what you make of it in the comments below. Is this a must have extra or a waste of space?
